Tampa International TPA Airport Guide

Address: 4100 George J Bean Pkwy, Tampa, FL 33607

Tampa International: Decidedly Local

Pub Crawl Around Tampa Bay Without Leaving the Airport At Tampa International Airport, the drinking establishments stand front and center. Whether you are in the mood for a craft beer, a 1980 Bordeaux or a hand-mixed cocktail, Tampa International delivers. Start your pub crawl at Cigar City Brewing, where you can savor one of Tampa's finest craft beers, or for a better deal opt for a flight to sample a few. You may even get lucky enough to find Hunahpu on tap -- Cigar City's most infamous concoction that can only be purchased on one day of the year. Next, make your way over to First Flight Wine Bar, which sells a wide array of wines by the glass at all different price points. Finally, stop at Ducky's Sports Lounge for an Old Fashioned or Russian Spring Punch, and maybe you'll even spot its owner, Tampa Bay Rays Superstar Evan Longoria. Whether you are thirsty from a day spent traveling or looking to kill some time before boarding, Tampa International's drinking scene is top notch.

The Shopping is Worse than a Full Body Cavity Search

Like most airports, Tampa International houses countless stores filled with hardbacked bestsellers, gummy bears and those weird neck ring pillows. However, where other airports may have a local gem or at least a pretty good gift shop for that last minute souvenir, Tampa International is completely devoid of anything cool or distinct. The closest thing to a local store is Ron Jon Surf shop... which is based on the other coast of Florida about three hours away from Tampa. If you are looking to kill time, skip the shopping and the cost of that Tampa Bay sand globe and see the paragraph above.

Welcome Home, Soldiers

The USO's Central Florida Welcome Center is located at Tampa International. With Tampa housing one of the country's preeminent Air Force bases, thousands of soldiers come through Tampa International airport each week. The USO Welcome Center provides complimentary food and beverages, a television lounge and a children's area for soldiers and their families.

Eat Local

While Tampa International airport offers quick-bite options from fast food staples such as Burger King and Popeye's and the known commodity of chain restaurants such as Carraba's and TGI Fridays, when you visit Tampa International, dare to eat local. Try Rumfish Grille, Guy Harvey's eating outpost specializing in fresh fish, or The Green Iguana, which serves salads, sandwiches and oversized burgers at a reasonable price. Finally, if you are really in the mood to immerse yourself in all things Tampa, visit the Columbia Cafe, which dishes up some of the best Cuban food north of the Florida Straits.

Tampa International Airport Displays its History

Just off the main terminal is a small corridor that displays some of the history of Tampa International Airport. For instance, you probably didn't know that the first commercial airline flight took off from Tampa International Airport in 1914 and touched down just 23 miles across the bay in St. Petersburg, Florida. This, along with other historically significant facts and memorabilia are proudly displayed in this small, often overlooked space.
