Highlights of Milwaukee General Mitchell Airport: Games and Giggles
From ping pong to humorous signs, Mitchell Airport brings light-hearted fun to your trip. You can usually cruise through the TSA checkpoint here in less than 10 minutes, but the process can still be a little frazzling. De-stress a little before heading through security by playing a round or two of ping pong at the airport’s free ping pong table.
If you’re still a little flustered once you’re through security, you can get squared away in the mischievously named Recombobulation Areas. The airport’s Recombobulation Area signs get a lot of attention because they’re the only ones in the world, and they always give travelers a laugh. Never discount the value of starting your trip off with a smile.
A Few Clouds at Milwaukee General Mitchell Airport
Some of the airport’s best features also lead to its less-than-stellar points. Because lines at the TSA checkpoints are usually short, it’s frustrating when the lines are unexpectedly long. This is often true very early on weekday mornings and late in the afternoon on Thursdays and Sundays. Still, the longest wait time was recorded at 25 minutes, which is a better deal than most other U.S. airports.
Also, the airport’s smaller size means that most of the restaurants and shops are located before security checkpoints. While some travelers enjoy the option of shopping or dining before heading through security, others find the lack of shops along the individual concourses frustrating.
Entertain Yourself at Milwaukee General Mitchell Airport
The airport’s ping pong tables are worth mentioning again for their sheer novelty and their free cost. A game of table tennis is a great way to meet fellow travelers and release a little travel stress.
If you’re interested in the history of local aviation, the Gallery of Flight Museum is a fun way to while away a layover. The museum’s exhibits include features of Wisconsin’s famous aviators, a model of Lindbergh’s Spirit of St. Louis, cockpit and airplane models and aviation artwork.
Pure Yumminess is on Tap at Milwaukee General Mitchell Airport
You’ll eat and drink well at this airport, thanks to a variety of famous Wisconsin delights. Fried cheese curds are one of the local dishes you must try, and you can find them at the main terminal’s Miller Brewhouse. For the ultimate Milwaukee experience, order a round of Miller beer to go with your fried cheese. Miller Brewhouse also has other cheese and bratwurst favorites and some lighter fare too. For a larger variety of local sausages, check out Usinger’s on Concourse D.
You have several options for quick, inexpensive snacks at the airport. Relish a creamy frozen custard at Northpoint in the main terminal, or snag a kringle pastry in the gift shop for a fairly cheap price.
More Highlights of MKE Airport
There are plenty of family-friendly services at General Mitchell Airport. Let your kids run off a little energy in the kiddie play area located in each concourse. The play areas are well-stocked with colorful toys and activities. If you need to breastfeed your baby in quiet or need to pump breastmilk, use one of the airport’s three lactation stations. The stations are great because they aren’t connected to restrooms so you don’t have the ick-factor of feeding your baby amongst toilets.
Wi-Fi is available in the airport, too, and it’s free for the first 20 minutes. There are also plenty of electrical outlets for recharging your laptops or mobile devices.
