McGhee Tyson (TYS) Airport Guide
Address: 2055 Alcoa Hwy, Alcoa, TN 37701
McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS) is a mid-sized public and military airport that serves the Metropolitan Knoxville, Tennessee area. Also serving as the home of the McGhee Tyson Air National Guard Base, the facility is named in honor of Charles McGhee Tyson, a Knoxville native and World War I U.S. Navy pilot who was killed in action in 1918 in Europe's North Sea off the coast of England.
Best Features of McGhee Tyson
Besides the breathtaking surroundings of the Great Smoky Mountains, one of the outstanding features of McGhee Tyson is the trademark Southern hospitality that's always delivered with a smile, an amenity that comes at no cost and is too often absent at similarly-sized and larger, busier airports. Friendly, welcoming and helpful customer service that goes far beyond the norm is extended effortlessly, and until you've been unfortunate to experience the alternative, it's easy to go unnoticed. This small but pleasant amenity is just part of the unique charm of TYS that is impossible to put a price on.
On the Other Hand ....
Being a relatively small, domestic service airport, TYS doesn't have the bustling, non-stop departure/arrival traffic found in larger metropolitan airports. Instead, McGhee Tyson has a more structured 9-to-5 schedule that can, at times, pose a slight inconvenience for hungry travelers facing a layover or delay. Most of the airport's dining establishments operate under a schedule that adheres to 'normal' business hours, meaning late-night availability can be sketchy. It's a small complaint, but it could be a big deal for some travelers who value their appetite.
Facts, Figures and Services About TYS
TYS is located 15-20 minutes from downtown Knoxville and covers over 2,000 acres. The two 9,000 foot-long runways are easily capable of accommodating any sized aircraft from such carriers as American Airlines, American Eagle, Delta, United and US Airways, to name a few. TYS is Wi-Fi-accessible and also offers ATM's throughout the terminals.
Restaurant and Shopping Options
McGhee Tyson's food court contains dining options that include popular establishments such as Quiznos, Ruby Tuesday's, Cinnabon, Express by Uno, Starbucks Coffee, Zia's and local favorite Cooper's Restaurant. Shopping choices for TYS aren't as extensive or filled with the lavish, upscale names found at much larger facilities, but what travelers will find is a well-stocked gift shop that specializes in discount items featuring many arts and crafts that are representative of the surrounding Smoky Mountain region. There's also a newsstand that provides the latest in local, national and international newspapers, periodicals and assorted reading material.
McGhee Tyson is fully aware that the airport experience can be a hectic one, so a large part of their mission is dedicated to providing the very best in comfort and convenience for their clientele regardless of how brief their visit may be. A popular amenity of TYS is their many rows of comfortable, plush leather-padded rocking chairs that provide an extremely relaxing respite from their often rushed activities. As an added bonus, you can even receive a professional shoe shine while waiting, just another 'down home' amenity that's synonymous with the unique experience that's a part of McGhee Tyson Airport.
