Des Moines (DSM) Airport Guide

Address: 5800 Fleur Dr, Des Moines, IA 50321

The two most common complaints among airline passengers are that the plane seats are too narrow and the waiting periods in the terminals are too long. There is nothing anyone can do about narrow seats except pay the price to upgrade to first class, but that cost is beyond the average traveler’s budget. Travelers can do something to make their terminal wait more productive and enjoyable: educate themselves on all of the amenities the terminal offers. If you are flying out of the Des Moines International Airport, for instance, here is a list of things to do while you wait:

Places to Eat at Des Moines Airport

Nothing helps satisfy a passenger’s anxiety more than a scrumptious meal and an adult beverage or two. A food court inside the main terminal has a wide variety of mouth-watering goodies including Pizza Hut Express, American Grill, Grab and Go and Blended Frozen Drinks. An intimate lounge also offers food and a full beverage selection. Once past security, a very nice restaurant offers full-menu service along with a beautiful view of the airfield. Several kiosks offer drinks and sandwiches and packaged deals of boxed treats to carry on board your flight. Delicious Departures Bakery & Deli has fresh pastries and a wide variety of sandwiches. Like good coffee? Des Moines Airport features delicious Freidrich’s Coffee exclusively throughout the airport. The New Capital Brew Club and The Sports Bar serve adult drinks and snacks while offering passengers a place to watch televised sports events when waiting for their planes.

Shopping at Des Moines Airport

Want a mug or a T-shirt to take home proving you’ve visited Des Moines? They’re available at The Paradies Gift Shops along with a large selection of Iowa souvenirs, books, magazines, casual clothing attire, assorted snack foods and drinks, and a wide variety of health and beauty aids. The Capitol Marketplace, located inside the security gates, also has a similar selection for waiting passengers. Look for discount prices on some multiple purchase items. Doherty's Flowers has fresh flower arrangement for arriving and departing passengers who might want to surprise that special someone at home. If you're looking for a snack after the airport closes at its posted hours, there are food and drink vending machines scattered throughout the terminal.

Other Amenities Offered at Des Moines Airport

45 minutes of complimentary Wi-Fi service is available via Boingo Wireless. ATMs/Cash Machines are located at the Terminal concourse and at the Concourse, Gates level.
The airport provides business workstations and internet access at Concourse level A2 between 5:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.
Notary Public Service is available Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The Cloud Room is available for large meetings and receptions. Audio/visual equipment is also available. There are also several conference rooms for smaller groups available.
Some sleeping cots are available for passengers who become stranded at the airport because of severe weather conditions. Where they are kept and who hands them out seem to be a well-kept secret, so ask early if there is any sign you will need one.

Complaint Department

As with any airport, DSM receives its share of complaints including:
No luggage storage or personal lockers are available .
No restaurant facilities after the terminals close.
Travelers report being dissatisfied with the general food and shopping offerings at DSM. Some also complained about the airport design and numerous delays.
However, the airport has spent several million dollars recently in terminal upgrades. All of these issues will be resolved with the multi-million dollar expansion of the airport and construction of a new terminal by 2024.
