Manchester Airport Guide

Manchester Airport consists of three terminals that handle departures and arrivals to and from all corners of the world. Overall, Manchester Airport provides a satisfying travel experience.

What Makes Manchester Airport Enjoyable

As an international travel hub, Manchester Airport has a lot to offer those passing through to other countries. The majority of travellers report that the airport staff is accommodating and doesn't harass travelers with pesky rules.

The airport has free Wi-Fi, but it is limited to 60 minutes per 24-hour period. Beyond that, you'll have to pay £5 per hour. There is also a monthly plan for frequent visitors that cost £30 a month.

Smokers will also be happy to know that there are exits to designated outdoor smoking areas in Terminals 1 and 2.

Why Manchester Airport Disappoints

Security queues are remarkably slow. If you have around an hour between flights, it would be smart to stay airside to avoid missing your connecting flight. Also, since the airport is so heavily traveled, it can become rather cramped during prime travel times.

How to Have a Grand Time

If you and your kids get to Manchester Airport after a long haul, you'll be happy to know that there is a children's play area in Terminal 2 around Gate 213. This an area designated for toddlers, and another for bigger kids.

If you arrive at Manchester Airport and can't wait to get a hot shower, you'll have luck on your side. The airport is able to offer just that at Terminal 2's Radisson Blu Hotel. The hotel is part of the airport as it is connected to the terminals via an elevated walkway. You can take advantage of its quick shower and change service, or partake in other leisure offerings for a small fee. The shower service is just £6, and the leisure access is only £12 per person.

If you want to relax away from the crowds, Manchester has a lot of different airport lounges. Escape branded lounges are available in each of the terminals. They offer complimentary food and drink, business facilities, and plenty of reading material as well as free Wi-Fi. The lounge in Terminal 2 is a good one to visit because it has a particularly homey feeling to it. They have a fairly reasonable entrance fee, just under £20. Nevertheless, children under age 6 are not allowed so you'll have to relax somewhere else if travelling with young kids.

Where to Fill Your Belly

The airport offers a fairly wide variety of eating options. If you arrive after hours and need a 24-hour restaurant, check out the The Runway Bar in Terminal 1. However, those who are in the terminal during business hours should try to eat at one of the following diners.

Café Balzar (in Terminal 1) brings a taste of France to this UK airport. They serve popular French dishes such as Pate Maison and Croque Monsieur. They also offer a version of steak fries and a French style hamburger if you're not too keen on traditional French cuisine. Café Balzar can meet your alcohol needs with its full bar and exceptional wine selection. It also has a spectacular runway view to keep travelers entertained during their meal.

Terminal 1 also houses a well-known restaurant called Giraffe. This eatery combines different cuisines from around the world, and offers a seasonal menu to keep things fresh. Some of the current seasonal offerings include Chili Beef Enchiladas and “Kiev” Chicken Schnitzel. They also have the run of the mill sandwiches and burgers, and a complete kids menu.

Broderick's will give you a taste of European style dining in a comfortable café setting. You'll have no problem getting your caffeine fix as the eatery offers numerous coffee style beverages. It also has fresh fruit juice, frappes, milkshakes and fruit smoothies. Broderick's unique fare includes a wide array of sandwiches, pastries and desserts. A popular, must-try sandwich is the Halaal Chicken Tikka Pannini, which is served warm. You can have your own Broderick's experience by heading to Terminal 2.

Another Tip for Manchester Travellers

The arrivals area of Terminal 2 has an ideal (by airport standards) location for sleeping. Here, you'll find plenty of chairs without armrests to stretch out on. The area is usually desolate during late evening hours, so finding a spot is not difficult. However, it would be wise to bring earplugs or headphones to drown out the noise from the P.A. system and cleaning crew. There is also a 24-hour cafe and mini-store in this area.
