Gatwick Airport Guide

Gatwick Airport is London’s second largest airport and Europe’s leading airport for point-to-point flights. Although Gatwick runs only a single runway, it is the busiest single runway in the world serving and serves the most destinations than any other UK airport, which are approximately 200 destinations in 90 countries annually.

The Best of Gatwick

Gatwick may be the second busiest airport in London, but it definitely knows how to treat their patrons well with amenities for both kids and adults.

Gatwick knows how important it is to keep the smallest members of your entourage happy and they've done what they can to ensure as smooth a trip as possible. When the iPad and books aren't quite enough to keep the children quiet, there are kid zones scattered throughout the airport. The areas are separated from the "grown up" areas and provide a safe place for your kids to play and watch TV. They have plenty of seating for caregivers, too, so you won't have to huddle around the perimeter. These lounges are located in the South and North terminal departure lounges.

Lounges are usually veteran travellers' favourite aspect of airports. The Servisair and No 1 lounges have special areas for families with kids under the age of 12. Watch TV or play board games with your kids to whittle away your wait time. The Servisair Lingfield lounge's kids area has video games and computers for the older kids. The new No. 1 lounge even has a cinema!

The Worst

Be prepared to walk. This isn't the time to wear your most uncomfortable shoes; wear shoes that are good for a hike. The airport has frequent complaints about the distance between the gates in the North terminal. There's also the issue of long security wait times, but that seems to be par for the course for large international airports. Again, be prepared for some walking as you'll have to go up and down a few levels to get through security and then through to the terminals.

Finally, reviewers frequently comment on how long it takes to get their baggage. Be sure to allow for plenty of time after you disembark from your plane to get your belongings before you can exit the airport.

What to Do While You Wait

The lounges at Gatwick are not to be missed. Why would you sit in the busy, crowded terminals in a hard chair with minimal elbowroom when you can leave all that behind?

If you're travelling for business and have some work to catch up on, visit the Regus Express Workpods. Consider it your office at the airport in soundproof, private workspaces with high speed Internet, printing access, and phone/device charging facilities. Is Gatwick Airport just one stop in the long line of flights for you? The Regus Express business lounge offers a comfortable lounge, meeting rooms, showers, and hot breakfast.

The No. 1 lounge has it all. Once you've booked the No. 1, you're not going to lack in amenities. Enjoy complimentary hot and cold food that's fresh and always delicious. A full bar is the perfect way to unwind once you've made it through the whirlwind packing before your trip. Widescreen TVs play BBC News and major sports games, while newspapers and magazines are available to take onto your flight.

Where to Eat

There's no better way to pass the time than with some delicious food!

North Terminal
It doesn't matter what you're looking for; you're sure to find it in the North terminal! Get fancy at the Caviar House and Prunier with their fresh seafood bar. If you're travelling with the kids, stop at Garfunkel's for breakfast with a family-friendly vibe. If you’re in a hurry, Wetherspoon Express has a wide array of goodies to take on the run.

South Terminal
Start your early morning flight right with Cafe Rouge's French delights that have made this restaurant a staple in the UK. Do you just need to unwind with a good beer and some greasy pub food? The London Bar is a full bar in a quiet atmosphere so you can unwind with a frosty pint.

Scared to Travel? Never Fear!

There's a Meet and Greet service that's far underutilized! If you're an inexperienced traveller, then you should consider this service! Upon your arrival, you'll be greeted by a concierge and taken to a private check-in desk. They'll take you through the airport's premier security channels where you'll then be taken to any of the lounges you might have reserved. If you're travelling internationally for the first time, this service will guide you through both arrival and departures! This can be especially helpful if you're overwhelmed at the prospect of going through customs.

Gatwick Airport might be a single runway airport, but their amenities can't be beat by any of the other larger regional airports. They know exactly what your needs are as a passenger and they've worked hard to accommodate everything that goes along with travel.
