Parking in Delhi: More is Needed

The Airport Experience...in New Delhi. Desicritics.org recently posted a blog about conditions in India's biggest city.

"The parking in the domestic terminal is a mess. Given the number of flights, the number of vehicles using the parking has increased tremendously while space has remained same; and this is where things get frustrating.

Everybody in the Government was aware of the increase in flights, and yet a contract to modernize the airports took so much time; with so much politicking. As a result, discomfort to people using the airport has increased, and measures to improve things will take much more time.

Leaving people at the domestic terminal departure is still fine; but the arrival could do with a lot more improvement. Twice in succession it has happened that I am looking at the arrival billboard, and while the airline arrival is still not confirmed, the people that I came to pick up came out.

In addition, the arrival open area seems like a fish market, with so many people packed into a small area. They really need to increase the area available. The improvement from a few months back is that you have more stalls with things to eat and drink, something desperately needed if you are waiting in the heat."

How Early Do You Usually Get to the Airport?

Alina Tugend writes in today's NY Times about a subject that divides many couples when it comes to travel. The topic is how early one needs to get to the airport.

"One partner, it seems, always wants to get there two days before the flight leaves (my husband), and one thinks 20 minutes before takeoff is just perfect (me).

All right, I exaggerate. But as with most people, I hate spending any more time than absolutely necessary in overly bright terminals with uncomfortable seats and noisy children (particularly if they are mine).

But, more times than I care to admit, I have been in the position of racing down the hall, frantically looking for Gate 1,000, banging into people with my carry-on and swearing that I will leave earlier for the airport next time.

We’re working on getting the balance right.

For Joe Brancatelli, editor of the travel Web site www.joesentme.com, the bottom line is, you must show up at least two hours before your domestic flight — and three hours before your international flight — is scheduled to take off.

My friend Chris, a lawyer, sees getting to the airport as matter of knocking down stress points.

“I want to be the guy on the plane reading a book when the guy stumbles on the plane sweating profusely carrying four bags and trying to squeeze into the last seat,” he said. “I want to shake my head knowingly and go back to my book.”

Cell Phone Lot Makes Sense at BWI

I read about a cool device in use at BWI airport today. It is a system of lights that guide parkers to empty spaces in the dark indoor parking area. They also have a
Cell Phone Lot

BWI has a free cell phone lot for patrons waiting for a phone call from an arriving passenger at the terminal for a pick-up. By using the lot, motorist can avoid circling BWI airport roadways while waiting for incoming passengers. The lot has 50 parking spaces and provides for quick access to the terminal to meet your guests.

The lot is located across from the entrance to the Daily parking garage on Elm Road and in front of the ESP lot. From 195 take exit 1-A.

Georgia Packers Speak Out About Hartsfield

I read a news release on a website called "Georgia packers." And I don't think this has anything to do with packing fruit or meat.

The discussion was about airport parking lots at Hartsfield and whether guns could be carried legally there.

"Airport Parking is off limits, right?" asked one poster named 'Doc Holliday.' I just left it at home, he continued, I hated it, but I did.

"20 years in prison and a $15,000 fine! See OCGA 16-12-123-127, said 'Malum' another poster from GA.

I saw on another web site a posting by an expert that declares people in Georgia may openly carry in Hartsfield, opined yet another poster. I'd like to get to the bottom of this, and welcome any clarifying comments.

Airport readies for more parking in Hudson Valley

Parking suddenly at a premium. The MidHudson News reports today that they are running out of parking at the local airport.

Stewart Airport – The new found success of Stewart Airport with the recent addition of two major discount airlines has caused an instant problem with the once near-empty parking lot.

The lot is now overflowing with airport officials scurrying to find alternate parking. One extra parking lot, a couple of blocks from the terminal, has been reopened and other parking is planned, said airport spokeswoman Tanya Vanasse.

“They did put in automatic parking machines in the alternate lot, so the process has gotten a little easier for customers to use that alternate lot,” she said. “We have opened up another area that gives us a little additional parking. We have done some things that were quick fixes that make the process easier.” Airport officials are in the process of paving one area to make way for more parking space near the terminal.

In the long term, the airport will explore other alternatives including the possibility of building decked parking.

Spotskey Sells Nooks and Crannies of Parking

These Guys are taking the parking business into smaller venues...crannies of opportunity.

"Spotskey is a new way to find parking and storage. "Our aim is to bring together people who have spare parking/storage spots with people who are looking to rent them. Our goal is to become the biggest parking and storage search engine on the web, making it simple and easy to find all your spots!

Matching frustrated motorists with the owners of empty parking spots can bring significant financial benefits to both parties, especially in major cities where parking is at a premium.

Most people who are renting out their parking spot can expect to earn between $50-$500 a month, depending on the location and demand for parking in your area. That means you can potentially pay your rent for a month, two months, possibility 3 months out of the year.

A recent study suggests that 30% of traffic in metropolitan areas is caused by motorists looking for parking. SpotsKey’s reserved parking structure means these motorists will not have to circle the block three or four times, reducing traffic.

Sounds like a good idea! www.spotskey.com
